Laura Lee on why she is interested in Holistic
Health Research: OK, I’m suspicious of our modern age – how we are cut off from Nature, from the wisdom of the Earth and cosmos and our own bodies. How we are full
of chemicals that our bodies and environment don’t know what to do with. How the mind set is on war mode – against microbes, insects, and people who
believe differently than we do, instead of on the principles of nurture and working with rather than against. I have personally found great success with the
more holistic modalities and philosophies.
Part of this I credit to stories and observations from childhood. My mother can run circles around me in terms of energy, and is slim and fit and strong as a
horse. She credits this to her organic natural upbringing, and tells the story of how her Swiss father, schooled in the old ways, found his medicines in the
fields. Complain of a tummy-ache, and he would go out and pick chamomile and brew up some tea, and consult a big old herbal book he brought from his
home country. He built his own house on a few acres, where he had room to raise hens for eggs, goats and one cow for milk, a small orchard of fruit, a
big vegetable garden, and a bee hive. As kids, my charming old grandfather tried to get us to believe he knew each honeybee by name. As they crawled
over his fingers, he say, "Well hello there Dan. Nice to see you Henry….."
And part of this I credit to inherent attraction (the kinder, gentler approach
of working with Nature just plain has more appeal all around) and to personal
observation and experience. I found, as a teenager, that a bowl of brown rice
and vegetables made me feel markedly better than processed foods did, and thus
began my first dive into vegetarianism and whole foods. And I found energetic
medicine, like the Bach Remedies and Homeopathy, marvelously effective. It was
one thing for me to notice the effect, (and I did – subtle, but oh so effective)
and it was another for a creature who couldn’t conjure up the placebo effect.
(Why do ignore the placebo effect which so effectively demonstrates the power of
the mind, when we should be harnessing it for healing? But that’s another
story).

During my first year with Paul, he asked me to take care of his big old dog Ike
for a weekend, while he went on a trip. A pair of Chows got hold of Ike and left
him with a few puncture wounds. Ike took to his bed, licking most of the wounds
back to health (love that Mother Nature, who provides us with cures at every
turn!) There remained one deep wound on Ike’s back that his tongue couldn’t
reach, and by Sunday, I grew alarmed as it festered, and Ike moped. Some dog
sitter I am, I thought. The vets weren’t open, so I went to the neighbor,
Catherine’s house to see what she could do. She was a dog person, so I figured I
had a chance here for Paul to return to a happy dog and relieved girlfriend.
Catherine took one look at Ike’s angry looking wound, and knew just what to do. She cut away the surrounding fur and dabbed it with a paper towel. Then
she went to a her medicine chest, brought back a small glass bottle with an eye dropper, and administered a few drops of a clear solution into the infected
puncture. She took a few tiny white pills from another bottle, and put them into Ike’s mouth. "What was that," I asked? "I gave him one homeopathic
remedy to reduce the inflammation, and another to reduce pain. Come on back tomorrow if he isn’t any better," she replied.
I did go back, but to report that Ike had made a miraculous recovery. Overnight, the infection dried up, and he was his old self, only better. He was prancing
around like a pony. No placebo effect here, and I had to ask, why use drugs when in some cases you can get this much cure from water imprinted with
vibration? I was off and running with energy medicine, and the whole field of holistic health.
I love this job because I am a sponge who loves to soak up new information. I feel the tingle of the Aha Moment, the thrill of discovery and the sense of
expansion that new understanding brings. I get to add new pages to my "owner’s manual" for the human body that we should be issued at birth. To take
care of ourselves, it helps to understand the beautifully designed Earth suit that we wear to be here! And I get new tools to use, more options to choose
from, and my how effective many of them have been.
